Inside the collection: The Scotland collection

The inspiration - Traveling through Scotland

Prior to starting the trip through Scotland I was on the brink of what felt like a burn-out, my office job in combination with lots of hours in my art business was really taking a toll on me. So this trip was perfect timing. The ruggedness and harshness of the environment taught me the beauty of resilience and strength. As I travelled through Scotland in our campervan, experiencing misty moors and the wild countryside and encountering the warm-hearted locals, I felt a sense of grounding and tranquillity. It was as though the country embraced me, encouraging a return to my roots and a deeper connection with myself. It started an inner dialogue of what is truly important to me.

These feelings became the driving force behind this collection. Each painting tells a story, embodying not only the essence of Scotland's rich heritage and breathtaking landscapes, but also the symbolic reflections of the resilience and strength that I found there.

The Creation process

To bring these pieces to life, I layered acrylic and spray paint over a grey base. The grey base was something new, I experimented with smaller paper pieces and the paper of these pieces was grey. I Liked the effect so I figured lets try it big! The vibrant colours of the abstracts beautifully interact with shades of grey, green, blue and delicate hints of pink and peach. Together, they form a mesmerising visual composition that pulls you into the depths of each painting. I also experimented with creating my own textured collage paper, the first time using more texture in my paintings it was uncomfortable at first but I love it and it really adds a unique touch that perfectly complements the theme. Finishing it off with oils as I always do, I could really make the colours pop and be at their best.

Uncovering the titles and poems

During my travels I journaled daily, writing stories about my experiences. When coming up with titles I immersed myself in these tales and also looked up music that gives me the same feelings as the paintings and traveling through Scotland. There is a lot of thought and contemplation that has gone into these titles and poems as they needed to feel just right. Titles like "The Mountain's Embrace," "Stillness of Time," and "Anchored" invite you to forge a personal connection with the artwork, allowing your own stories to unfold within them.

I don't think I ever before created such a deeply intertwined collection where the techniques and the process of everything was so woven with the experiences I had and Im super excited to share them with you!

"Look to the horizon and find your place there."
